Clamping us in iron-rod-wick’d chains;
chains, piercing pieces our flesh and bones;
chains, holding us in the hail hell of bondage,
refusing us our long-lov’d freedom,
which now have to come thro’ pens and persuasion,
for that is our only light for freedom
without which we forev’r live in Egypt in chain.
